Hawkeyes Sign California Prep Standout

April 19, 2004

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team announced the signing of Summer Downs to a National Letter of Intent Monday. Downs will enroll at Iowa this fall and joins the incoming freshman class of Stephanie Acherson, Kim Howell and Emily Nichols, who signed with the Hawkeyes last fall.

Downs was an all-CIF Scholar Athlete from 2001-03 and an All-Palomar League pick in 2001 and 2002. She led her Rancho Bernardo High School to a CIF runner-up finish in 2001.

Downs has a wealth of ASA softball experience, playing ASA Gold softball for the San Diego Renegades and the Case Batbusters. She also led the San Diego Thunder to the 2000-01 ASA 14-under championships.

She has been a success in the classroom as well, and was a member of the honor roll from 2000-03.

“Summer Downs is an excellent addition to our recruiting class,” Iowa Head Coach Gayle Blevins said. “As a middle infielder, her ASA and high school experience will prove invaluable to us. She is a great competitor and chose Iowa because of this. Her love and enthusiasm for the game fit well in the Hawkeye program. The experiences she will have this summer with Jim Dolan’s Batbusters will allow her to start at an even higher level in our program. Summer is equally outstanding academically, and her 3.714 GPA is a testament to this. We are pleased to welcome Summer Downs to our Hawkeye program.”
