IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by No. 16 Ohio State Sunday, 4-1. Freshman Jamie Maltman recorded her first career goal as a Hawkeye in the loss.
Maltman’s goal came in the 70th minute when she blasted a deep shot that found the upper 90 of the left hand side of the goal, freezing Ohio State goalkeeper Jen Heaney. Iowa had a couple quality scoring chances in the second half but could not find the back of the net. Avery Bang received a beautiful pass from Maltman and her shot from inside the 18-yard box sailed just wide of the net. Iowa almost converted on a corner kick late in the second half, but an Ohio State defender threw her body in front of the goal to deflect Ashley Schlueter’s shot just before it crossed the goal line.
Iowa’s defense was strong in the second half, allowing no goals on 11 shots. Freshman Lindsey Boldt replaced Britta Vogele at the start of the second half and had an impressive performance, recording four saves. Vogele allowed four goals and saved five shots.
The Hawkeyes will host Minnesota on Friday, October 22. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
