ANN ARBOR, MI – The Iowa men’s tennis team was eliminated from main draw singles, but still has two doubles teams competing in the doubles event Saturday afternoon at the ITA Regionals at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, MI.
In singles competition, freshman J.P Ritchie was eliminated in the first round of qualifying after a 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 loss to Nick Edlefson of Minnesota. Junior Chaitu Malempati fell to Ohio State’s Dominic Ozanne in qualifying 6-2, 6-2. Junior Kyle Markham came up with the only singles victory for the Hawkeyes in singles play with a victory over Toledo’s Tony Tran in the first round of qualifying with a 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-3 win. Markham fell in the next round to Rob Altenau of Dayton 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, juniors Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor edged out Michigan’s Josef Fischer and Matko Maravic 9-8(2). Junior Chaitu Malempati and freshman Bart van Monsjou were also winners over Illinois’ Andrew Eklov and Monte Tucker 9-8(8). The two victories will advance the duos to the second round of main draw bracket.
The Hawkeyes will compete tomorrow at the Varsity Tennis Center in Ann Arbor, MI with the first matches beginning at 8 a.m.
