EVANSTON, IL – The University of Iowa wrestling team is in fifth place with 30.0 points after today’s first session of the 2004 Midlands Championships in Evanston, IL. Northern Iowa leads the tight team field with 34.5 points. Of Iowa’s 22 competitors entered in the 42nd annual tournament, six are still alive in the championship bracket and 11 are still competing in the consolation bracket.
Iowa’s championship bracket competitors include top seeds Ty Eustice (149) and Paul Bradley (184), third-seeds Mark Perry (165) and Matt Fields (Hwt.), five-seed Alex Tsirtsis (141) and six-seed Joe Johnston (157). Still competing in the consolation bracket for the Hawkeyes are Charlie Falck, Matt Morkel and Lucas Magnani at 125, Mario Galanakis (133), Ned Shuck (149), Alex Grunder and Cole Pape at 157, Luke Lofthouse (174), Dane Pape and Major Ennen at 197 and Chad Barkalow (Hwt.).
All but one championship bracket competitor will face a seeded opponent in tonight’s quarterfinal round. At 141, Tsirtsis will face #4 Donald Lockett of San Fransico State. At 149, Eustice will face #8 Jeff Harrison of Northern Iowa. The two met in the Iowa vs. Northern Iowa dual on December 9, with Eustice winning a 5-3 decision. Johnston will face #3 Muzaffer Abdurakhmanov of American at 157, while Perry will face unattached competitor Deonte Penn at 165. At 184, Bradley will face #9 Ed Magrys of Eastern Michigan and Fields will face #6 Pat DeGain of Indiana at heavyweight.
Tonight’s second session will feature the championship quarterfinals and consolation matches. The tournament’s third and fourth sessions will be held Thursday at Northwestern’s Welsh-Ryan Arena.
