Galanakis Earns Conference Honor

IOWA CITY, IA – Iowa wrestler Mario Galanakis has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week. Galanakis, a junior from Greenfield, IA, wrestles at 133 pounds. He was honored for upsetting two ranked opponents and recording three wins last weekend, as Iowa defeated Virginia Tech (38-0), Fresno State (30-7) and Cal-Davis (26-9). Galanakis dominated sixth-ranked David Hoffman of Virginia Tech, 8-4, scoring three takedowns, an escape and a riding time point while holding Hoffman to four escapes. He then defeated Fresno State’s Joe Mavins, 7-0, before beating top-20 ranked Derek Moore of Cal-Davis, 5-4.

Galanakis is 7-2 in collegiate competition and 6-0 in duals. He is the first Iowa wrestler to earn the Big Ten weekly honors this season.

Galanakis and the Hawkeyes will face top-ranked Oklahoma State Sunday in Stillwater, OK. Match time is set for 1:30 p.m. (CT) in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
