Iowa Holds Off Wisconsin, 19-14

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa wrestling team won the last match of the dual to hold off Wisconsin, 19-14, earlier today in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was Iowa’s 31st straight victory in the series, and its 780th dual win in school history. The Hawkeyes improve to 6-2 overall, 1-0 in the Big Ten, while Wisconsin falls to 7-2-1 overall, 0-2 in the Big Ten.

Hawkeye junior Joe Johnston kicked the off dual at 157 pounds by scoring his 75th career victory, beating Wisconsin’s Tyler Turner 7-4. Hawkeye redshirt freshman Mark Perry followed up with an 8-5 decision over Jake Donar at 165.

Wisconsin fought back hard picking up major decisions at 174 and 197, and a decision at 184 with Brady Reinke’s 4-3 win over second-ranked Hawkeye Paul Bradley. Iowa used wins at the next three weights to take a 16-11 team lead. Freshman Matt Fields started the Iowa roll with a 15-4 major decision over Lee Kraemer at heavyweight.

Iowa freshman Charlie Falck scored a reversal with seven seconds left in regulation to force sudden victory against Collin Cudd at 125. Falck took Cudd down in the sudden victory period to win the match, 13-11. At 133, Hawkeye junior Mario Galanakis received two penalty points on stall warnings in the last 37 seconds to take his match against defending Big Ten Champion Tom Clum into sudden victory. Galanakis scored the takedown and two nearfall points to win, 9-5.

Wisconsin grabbed three team points with Ed Gutnik’s 7-2 win over Alex Tsirtsis at 141 to make the team score 16-14 and the dual win a possibility for the Badgers with a win at 149. Hawkeye senior Ty Eustice spoiled the Badger’s upset plans, scoring his 70th career win with a 3-2 decision over Craig Henning to end the meet.

Galanakis, Eustice, Johnston and Fields all improved to 7-1 in dual competition, while Perry is 6-1 and Falck is 5-1.

Iowa will have a Big Ten road trip next weekend, facing Illinois (10-0, 1-0 in the Big Ten) Friday at 7 p.m. in Champaign, IL, and Northwestern (8-1, 1-1 in the Big Ten) Saturday at 7 p.m. in Evanston, IL.
