IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team defeated Northern Illinois today at the Recreational Building 6-1 in their first dual meet of the season. Iowa is now 1-0 (0-0 Big Ten) while the Huskies fall to 0-3 on the season.

Iowa won all three of their doubles matches this afternoon. The junior pair of Kyle Markham and Brett Taylor defeated Willy Gali and Alex Friesen 8-6 in the No. 1 spot. The pair of Markham and Taylor were competing in their first dual competition as Hawkeyes after competing together last season at Johnson County Community College in Kansas. Junior Chaitu Malempati and freshman Bart van Monsjou defeated the pair of Mark Tate and Erick Martinez 9-8 (5) at the No. 2 spot. In the No. 3 match freshman J.P. Ritchie and junior Aaron Schachterle finished the sweep of doubles play by defeating Adam Ford and Diego Zegarra-Ballon 8-2.

Iowa continued its strong play in singles action by wining five of the six matches. In the No. 2 spot Kyle Markham got the ball rolling with a victory over Erick Martinez in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. At No. 3 J.P. Ritchie defeated Mark Tate 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. Bart van Monsjou continued the Hawkeyes winning ways in the No. 4 position by winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Jonny Hoak defeated Adam Ford at the No. 5 spot rallying in the final two sets 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-3. To cap the competition off Brett Taylor defeated Diego Zegarra-Ballon 4-6, 6-4 (10-1) in the No. 6 position.

“We had four new players in the lineup, given that I thought it was an especially good win against a good opponent,” said Iowa Head Coach Steve Houghton.

Iowa will return to action next weekend when they travel to Indiana to compete against a pair of non-conference opponents. The Hawkeyes will take on Indiana State on February 5 and Butler on February 6.
