Favorites Advance, Iowa Waiting

The teams expected to win the first games of the 2005 Big Ten Conference Softball Tournament staged Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich., did so.

No. 2 seed Northwestern dealt No. 7 seed Purdue a 2-0 defeat in the tournament’s opener. The host school, the league’s regular season champion, Michigan, then defeated No. 8 seed Michigan State, 6-2.

Coach Gayle Blevins’ nationally ranked Iowa Hawkeyes – the tournament’s No. 3 seed – will square off against Penn State Friday at 11 a.m. Iowa time. The winner of the game will meet Northwestern at 4 p.m. Iowa time.
