Five Hawkeyes Named All-Big Ten

IOWA CITY – Five University of Iowa baseball players were honored by the Big Ten Conference Tuesday by being named all-Big Ten selections. Tim Gudex was a first-team honoree and Nate Price was named to the second team, while Andy Lytle, Kris Welker and Jason White were both named to the third team.

Gudex, the only relief pitcher named to the first team, has enjoyed an amazing season. The Appleton, WI, native led the Big Ten in conference wins (7), saves (6), ERA (1.11), appearances (19), games in relief (19), games finished (19) and opponent’s batting average (.205). He also led the conference in overall ERA at 2.56.

Price, from Palm Harbor, FL, earned second team outfield laurels by hitting .351 and going a perfect 9-of-9 in stolen base attempts in conference play. Overall, he is hitting .319 with seven doubles, three triples, 27 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

Lytle, a shortstop from Denver, CO, is hitting a career-best .330 with two home runs and 34 RBIs. He leads the Hawkeyes with 18 stolen bases, and has one of the best infield arms in the conference.

Welker, a catcher from Missoula, MT, is hitting .358 with a .367 clip in conference play. He leads the team with 44 RBIs, and led the Big Ten with 12 doubles in conference play.

White, a second baseman from Fort Collins, CO, was eighth in the Big Ten with an Iowa-best .383 average in conference play. Against teams that qualified for the Big Ten Tournament, White was even better, hitting .442 with four doubles, three triples and seven RBIs. Overall, he is hitting .319 with six stolen bases.

Iowa is the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament this week in Champaign, IL, and will battle No. 6 Minnesota in the opening round game Wednesday at 3:35 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on AM-800 KXIC.
