The Hawkeye field hockey team picked up their second win Saturday night against the Golden Bears of California. After a strong offensive effort against Stanford on Friday, Iowa kept the momentum rolling to beat the Bears 2-1.

Senior Debbie Birrell scored first for the Hawkeyes at the 31:56 mark in the first half for a 1-0 lead. Freshman Lauren Pfeiffer scored her first collegiate goal in the middle of the second half to put the Hawkeyes up 2-0.

After Pfeiffer’s goal, Cal’s offense woke up and took several shots, including one by Valentina Godfrid that found the net to cut the Hawkeye’s lead to just one goal. The Bear’s offensive comeback was too little, too late, however, as Iowa prevailed 2-1.

Iowa’s margin of victory was small compared to the differences on the stat sheet. The Hawkeyes took 22 shots in the game to just 11 by the Bears. Iowa had seven shots on goal to Cal’s two. Pfeiffer led the Hawkeyes with six shots and two shots on goal. Fellow freshman Caitlin McCurdy was next with five shots total, two on goal. Birrell, a midfielder for the Hawkeyes, was efficient with three shots total and two on goal with one finding the net for her ninth career goal.

Lissa Munley was the starting goalkeeper again for the Hawkeyes. The freshman had two saves in the game to move her season total to 16. Munley’s season goals against average is just 1.61.

Iowa (2-2) squares off against the Pacific Tigers (2-2) Monday at 1 p.m. The teams will play at Maxwell Family Field on the UC-Berkeley campus.
