IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa women’s soccer team was defeated by the Iowa State Cyclones, 2-1 Wednesday at the Iowa Soccer Complex. The win gave Iowa State the first two points in the second annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.
Iowa State jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Amy Flores volleyed in a cross from Meghan Smith. The Hawkeyes nearly tied the match in the 10th minute when senior Katelyn Quinn received a ball from sophomore Jamie Maltman inside the 18-yard box, but the Cyclone defense cleared the ball just before Quinn could make a play.
The Cyclones scored their second goal in the 20th minute after Renee de St. Aubin knocked in a loose ball that deflected off Iowa goalkeeper Lindsey Boldt and into the back of the net.
The Hawkeyes answered in the 37th minute when freshman Stephanie Hyink used a nice move to create some space and then sent a cross across the box to freshman Manon Engelhardt, who blasted the ball in the back of the net.
Iowa saw a few scoring chances in the second half, including a great run by Quinn to the top of the box, but Iowa State goalkeeper Joanna Haig and the Cyclone defense kept the Hawkeyes in check.
Quinn led the Hawkeye offense, registering five shots. Boldt recorded six saves.
The Hawkeyes return to action Sunday against Missouri at 1 p.m. at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
