Iowa Opens Competition At ITA Regional

ANN ARBOR, MI – Two out of three Hawkeyes advanced today in the opening round of the ITA Midwest Regional. Today’s competition was the first round of singles qualifying matches.

The most notable Hawkeye win came from freshman Christian Bierich. He beat the number three seed, Joseph McWilliams, 6-4, 6-1. Senior Chaitu Malempati also pulled in a win for the Hawkeyes. He defeated Andy Lockhart, 6-2, 6-2. The third Hawkeye in competition today was senior Brett Taylor. He was defeated by Yuichi Uda, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

Bierich and Malempati both advance to the second round of singles qualifying matches. Bierich will face Colin Foster of Purdue and Malempati will face Lachezar Kasarov of Wisconsin in the second round.

Competition at the ITA tournament continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. The second round of singles qualifying will be held in the morning, followed by the final qualifying round. The first round of doubles competition will begin tomorrow afternoon. All matches will be played at the Varsity Tennis Center on the University of Michigan campus.
