Hawkeyes Race On The Iowa River

IOWA CITY – The Iowa rowing squad finished its fall head-race season Sunday by hosting the Head of the Iowa regatta. The Hawkeyes competed in the open pair, open single, novice eight and open eight.

Freshman Laura Kanaris had Iowa’s overall best finish of the day. She placed second in the open single with a time of 18:18. Also competing in that race was junior Megan Conner and junior Ashley Gustafson, placing 10th (19:01) and 16th (20:04), respectively. Overall, 19 boats competed in that race.

Iowa had one boat racing in the open pair. The Hawkeye team of senior Lydia McGee and freshman Kat Davy-Traynor placed third out of 18 with a time of 17:24.

Four Hawkeye teams competed in a field of 26 boats in the novice eight race. Iowa A took 14th place, 17:14. Following right behind was Iowa B in 15th place with a time of 17:23. Iowa C had a time of 17:57, securing an 18th place finish. Iowa D rounded out the race for the Hawkeyes in 24th place. 19:09.

The Hawkeyes ended the day racing in the open eight. Iowa’s two boats in competition both finished in the top ten of 22 boats. Iowa A, with a time of 14:21, finished fourth. Junior Lori Rehel, senior Lydia McGee, junior Jessie Reid, junior Carolyn O’Meara, freshman Melissa Wordelman, sophomore Brittany Keyes, freshman Laura Kanaris, freshman Kristin Kelly and freshman Kat Davy-Traynor competed in Iowa’s A boat. Iowa B finished 10th in 14:59.

The rowing squad will be on the water next Sunday racing against Indiana.
