Hawkeyes Down Wisconsin, 24-7

Madison, WI – The University of Iowa wrestling team defeated Wisconsin, 24-7 in its first Big Ten match of the season. The Hawkeyes won eight of the 10 bouts on the evening.

Iowa started strong, recording wins in the first four matches. The meet started at 184 pounds where Paul Bradley defeated Justin Peterson, 13-9. Dan Erekson (197) followed with an 8-5 win and Matt Fields (Hwt.) recorded an 8-2 victory. Next up was Lucas Magnani (125) who gave Iowa an early 12-0 lead with a 6-4 decision over Colin Cudd.

The Badgers scored their first points of the night when Tum Clum earned a 12-4 major decision over Daniel Dennis (133). Alex Tsirtsis (141) increased the Hawkeye lead with a 10-3 decision followed by a 3-2 decision from Ty Eustice (149) and the Hawkeyes led, 18-4 going into the final three bouts.

Wisconsin’s Craig Henning put Wisconsin back on the board with a 7-2 decision over Joe Johnston (157). Iowa ended strong, picking up wins from Erick Luedke (165) and Ben Stedman (174) in the final two matches to seal the victory.

Iowa will travel to Minnesota to face the rival Golden Gophers at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
