Hawkeyes Defeated by Spartans, 19-17

EAST LANSING, MI – The University of Iowa wrestling team was defeated by Michigan State, 19-17, Sunday afternoon in East Lansing, MI. The Hawkeyes fall to 9-6, 3-3 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes and Spartans each won five matches in the dual, but Michigan State won the battle of the bonus points with a pin at 125 pounds and a major decision at 174.

Senior 184-pounder Paul Bradley started things off on a strong note for Iowa, nabbing a 5-2 win over Joe Williams to kick off the dual. Freshman Dan Erekson then fell 8-4 to senior Jeff Clemens to knot the dual at 3-3.

At heavyweight, Ryan Fuller gave Iowa a 6-3 lead with a 7-3 win over Max Lossen before the Spartans came storming back. Michigan State won the next three matches, led by a pin of Lucas Magnani by Nick Simmons at 125. Jeff Wimberly downed freshman 133-pounder Daniel Dennis after the Hawkeye jumped out to an early 5-1 lead, before Andy Simmons edged Alex Tsirtsis, 2-1, at 141 pounds.

With their backs against the wall, Iowa struck back with three-straight wins. Ty Eustice defeated Darren McKnight, 9-5, then Joe Johnston and Eric Luedke picked up major decision wins to give the Hawkeyes a 17-15 lead going into the final match. Sixth-ranked R.J. Boudro sealed the deal for the Spartans with a 13-3 major decision over Ben Stedman, who was wrestling for injured Mark Perry.

Iowa returns to the mat Friday when it hosts Illinois at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
