IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa softball team (25-15, 4-3) was defeated by 12th-ranked Michigan (26-10, 6-1) Friday night at Pearl Field. The Wolverines scored all three runs in the first inning but only collected five hits off Iowa starting pitcher Brittany Weil.

Weil threw a wild pitch and hit a Wolverine batter, both with the bases loaded, for the first two Michigan runs. The Wolverines scored the third run of the inning off an infield single by Rebekah Millian.

Weil settled down after the first frame and retired 10 of the next 12 Wolverine batters. She scattered five hits through seven innings of work while walking five and striking out three.

The Hawkeye offense was held to just two hits by freshman Erin Riemersma and senior Stacy May. Iowa also drew three walks of Michigan starter Jennie Ritter.

Iowa will host Michigan at Pearl Field Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. Fans are encouraged to “Be Bold, Wear Gold.”
