April 16, 2006

Box Score

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa was defeated by the Minnesota Golden Gophers, 12-1, on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Banks Field. Iowa falls to 15-17 (5-7), while Minnesota moves to 18-14 (6-6) with the series win.

The Gophers scored 11 of their 12 runs with two outs.

The Hawkeyes struggled early both on the hill and in the field, allowing Minnesota to build an early lead and cruise to the win. Iowa starter Travis Sweet had trouble getting out of innings early, getting the first two hitters out in each of the first two innings before Minnesota rallied for runs.

The Golden Gophers took advantage of inconsistent pitching and sloppy fielding to score in each of the first five innings.

Iowa got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double from Jeff Engel.

Freshman Steve Turnbull got the Hawkeye pitching staff on track when he entered in the fifth and threw three and two-thirds inning of shutout ball.

The Hawkeyes return to action Tuesday when they host North Dakota State at 6 p.m.
