The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Stanford 2-1. Tonight was the first game to be played at night on Grant Field. The two Hawkeye goals were scored by sophomores, Lauren Pfeiffer and Caitlin McCurdy.

Iowa (3-4) scored the first goal of the game. It came off of a penalty corner 55 seconds into the first period. Pfeiffer scored the goal awarding a double assist to Heather Schnepf and Kadi Sickel. Only four minutes later McCurdy took the ball off of a rebound and blasted it past the Stanford goalkeeper extending the Hawkeyes lead. The Hawkeyes were able to hold the Cardinal scoreless during the first half giving Iowa a 2-0 advantage.

Stanford (2-5) came out of halftime with a newfound energy. They were able to hold the Hawkeyes to zero second half goals. During the 57th minute Stanford was awarded a penalty corner. Through a flurry of shots midfielder Julia Drewes was able to poke one past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley. The Hawkeyes held the Cardinal to no further goals giving Iowa a 2-1 victory.

The Hawkeyes out shot Stanford 12-8. Four of Stanford’s eight shots came during the 57th minute penalty corner. The Hawkeyes also out cornered Stanford 6-4. Five of Iowa’s penalty corners came during the second half.

Iowa returns to action Saturday at 12 p.m. (CDT) against Boston University in Providence, RI.
