IOWA CITY – Four softball student-athletes have been named National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Academic all-American Scholar Athletes. Seniors Mindy Heidgerken and Sami Baugh, along with sophomores Colleen McGlaughlin and Erin Riemersma received the honor. To be an NFCA Academic all-American Scholar Athlete, students must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or better.
Heidgerken, who is double-majoring in art and journalism, finished the 2006 season with a .302 batting average. She was a third team all-Big Ten selection and was second on the team in hits (57), runs scored (28) and stolen bases (9). Heidgerken also had seven home runs and a team-best three triples.
Baugh is majoring in health and sports studies along with communication studies. She ended last season with a .200 batting average and16 RBI. Baugh also threw out 13 potential base-stealers.
McGlaughlin played in 48 games with 19 starts in 2006 and collected two home runs and three doubles. She is a pre-actuarial science major.
Riemersma started all 61 games at second base last season and was a third team all-Big Ten pick. She tallied a .265 batting average with five home runs, nine doubles, three triples and 30 runs scored. Riemersma is majoring in finance.
