Box Score

FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team snapped it’s three-game losing streak with a wild, 10-inning win over Dallas Baptist, 17-13, in the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic Friday night.

Iowa took a two-run lead into the eighth inning, but Dallas Baptist got a two-run double from Garrett Baker to tie things up. Both teams were scoreless in the ninth, and the game went to extra innings.

The Hawkeyes wasted no time putting runs on the board in the extra frame. Matt Wooldrik led off with a single, then went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Caleb Curry. Justin Toole then ripped a single to left, and Wooldrik came home on an error by the leftfielder. Jason White brought Toole home with a double, but was thrown out at home on a groundball from Travis Sweet. Kevin Hoef put runners on first and third with a double, then Dusty Napoleon cleared the bases with a double.

Iowa closer picked up the win by holding the Patriots scoreless in the bottom of the inning.

Napoleon (3-of-5, 5 RBIs), Sweet (3-of-7, 4 RBIs) and Hoef (3-of-5, 2 RBIs) led the offense for Iowa. Wooldrik was 3-of-6 with three runs scored.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with each team taking substantial leads they were unable to hold. The Patriots jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first and a five-spot in the second.

Iowa responded with three runs in the third and five in the fourth. Dallas Baptist tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, only to have Iowa take a 9-8 lead in the fifth, then add three more in the sixth and one in the seventh.

The Hawkeyes return to action tonight with a game against Fresno State.
