Hawkeyes Win Big Ten Opener

Bloomington, IN – The University of Iowa softball team defeated Indiana, 4-0, Friday in the first game of Big Ten play. Iowa improved its record to 24-13 while Indiana falls to 17-14.

Iowa wasted no time taking the lead, plating one run in the top of the first to take a 1-0 advantage. Junior Emily Nichols drew a two-out walk and scored from first base on an RBI double by junior Summer Downs.

Sophomore Erin Riemersma gave Iowa a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth with a solo home run over the left field fence.

Doubles by Riemersma and Nichols gave Iowa a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh inning. Riemersma started the seventh with a double to center field that nearly cleared the fence, followed by a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Lindsey Emery. Nichols then roped a double to left field that hit the fence, allowing Riemersma to score. Freshman Heidi Daumen took Nichols’ place at second and scored on an RBI single by McGlaughlin for a 4-0 lead.

McGlaughlin finished 3-4 with an RBI while Riemersma collected two hits.

Sophomore Brittany Weil threw her sixth complete game and fifth shutout of the season. Weil scattered three hits and struck out eight while walking zero. She retired 14 of the final 16 batters, including nine-straight between the fourth and sixth innings.
