Hawkeyes Drop Regular Season Finale, 7-2

IOWA CITY – The University of Iowa baseball team dropped the 2007 regular season finale, 7-2, to the Michigan Wolverines Sunday at Banks Field. Iowa’s record falls to 31-21 (17-13), while Michigan raises its mark to 39-14 (21-7).

Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI double from Caleb Curry.

Michigan struck back in a big way in the top of the third, getting a grand slam from designated hitter Zach Putnam after a double and back-to-back walks loaded the bases.

The Hawkeyes cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth when Kevin Hoef led off with a single, moved to second on a balk and scored on an RBI single from Justin Toole.

Michigan added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth, getting a two-out RBI singles from Doug Pickens, Dan VanBuskirk and Chris Berset.

Iowa will head into the Big Ten Tournament next week in Ann Arbor, MI. The Hawkeyes will be the No. 4 seed and take on No. 5 Illinois Wednesday.
