Hawkeyes Open Season at Big Four Championships

THIS WEEK — The University of Iowa men’s golf team will travel to Cedar Rapids to open their season at the Big Four Championships. Competition will consist of 36 holes on Tuesday, September 4 at Elmcrest Country Club with tee times starting at 8 a.m.

ELMCREST COUNTRY CLUB — Elmcrest Country Club, located in Cedar Rapids was established in 1947. The par 70 course covers 6,362 yards, and is known for its bentgrass fairways and greens.

THE COMPETITION — Teams competing along with Iowa include Drake, Iowa State and Northern Iowa.

BIG FOUR HISTORY — Dan Holterhaus led the Hawkeyes and finished second overall with a 36-hole score of 138. The Hawkeyes finished tied for third as a team last year. Iowa State won the event in 2006 as Drake finished second. Scot Glasford tied for 15th overall with a score of 148 and Zack Anderson placed 19th with a score of 149.

THIS WEEK’S LINEUP — Iowa’s lineup for the Big Four Championship will be determined when qualifying is completed on Saturday.

2007-08 HAWKEYES — The 2007-08 men’s golf team will be led be first year coach Mark Hankins. The squad returns six letterwinners from a year ago. Dan Holterhaus leads the returning letterwinners with a scoring average of 75.2 from the 2006-07 season.

HEAD COACH Mark Hankins — Hankins is in his first year as the head men’s golf coach at Iowa. He was named Big Ten Coach of the Year at Michigan State in 2005 and 2007 after leading the Spartans to Big Ten Championships in those years. Hankins also led the Spartans to five NCAA tournament appearances in his seven years as head coach at Michigan State.
