DURHAM, NC – The University of Iowa field hockey team improved its record to 3-1, by defeating William & Mary, 1-0, Monday. Junior Lissa Munley recorded her third shutout of the season and the second in as many days. Earlier Monday, Munley was named Big Ten Player of the Week for her efforts in a 2-0 win over No. 4 Duke.
The Hawkeyes were able to score early in the first half. Only five minutes into the game, Iowa was awarded a penalty corner. Junior Lauren Pfeiffer took the initial shot but was denied by the defense. Lindsey Duffy gained control of the ball and slapped it past the goalkeeper for Iowa’s lone goal of the game.
This marks the second straight game Duffy recorded the game winning goal and it was her third goal of the season.
Throughout the game, the Hawkeyes dominated their opponent in shots taken and penalty corners awarded. Iowa attempted 18 shots and had 11 penalty corners, compared to three shots and one penalty corner for William & Mary.
The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m. against No. 14 Louisville at Grant Field.
