The fifth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team (11-2, 2-1) beat Providence (8-5) 3-1, Saturday. Junior Lauren Pfeiffer scored her 12th goal of the season, with eight goals in the past five games. Senior Kadi Sickel and sophomore Jess Werley also recorded goals for the Hawkeyes.

“We did a great job of playing at a high level today,” Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. “Providence is a very well coached team and is very organized. They have a lot of speed and we did a good job of controlling it.”

The Hawkeyes were able to break the scoreless tie during the 30th minute of a close first half. Sickel tipped the ball into the net after receiving the assist from Pfeiffer.

Werley added another goal for the Hawkeyes in the 37th minute, after she rebounded a missed shot. Only three minutes later, Providence scored its first goal of the game off of a penalty corner.

Iowa lengthened its lead when Pfeiffer blasted a shot past the Providence defense in the 47th minute. She received the assist from juniors Caroline Blaum and Roz Ellis. Blaum’s assist was her eighth of the year.

“Our team played very strong on both sides of the ball, it was a collective team effort,” Griesbaum said.

The Hawkeyes will return to action against Ohio State Sunday, Oct. 14, at noon (CT) in Columbus, OH. The game will be televised by the Big Ten Network, it will mark the first time Griesbaum and her squad will play on the network.
