Dorr/Lee Win Hoosier Classic Doubles Championship

BLOOMINGTON, IN –

The Iowa women’s tennis team ended competition on a high note today at the Hoosier Classic, hosted by the University of Indiana. Alexis Dorr and Jacqueline Lee went 4-0 in doubles competition today and Saturday to claim the doubles championship. Teammates Merel Beelen and Milica Veselinovic were finalists in today’s doubles competition, posting a 3-1 doubles record for the tournament.

After defeating Ferrel/C. Ulery of Vanderbilt, 8-6, in the third round of doubles competition today, Dorr/Lee were named champions when they defeated Sveke/K. Ulery of Vanderbilt, 8-4, in the final match. Beelen/Veselinovic were victorious in third round play today, defeating Sveke/K. Ulery of Vanderbilt, 8-0, but fell in their final match to Ferrell/C. Ulery of Vanderbilt, 8-3.

In other doubles action, Berry/Poggensee-Wei defeated Dudzik/Matsuto of Western Michigan, 8-4, in third round play today and ended the tournament as consolation finalists after falling to Moccia/Saruta of Western Michigan, 8-3, in their final match.

In singles action, Kelcie Klockenga took second place in her flight Saturday after falling to Stephanie Heller of Indiana, 6-2, 6-2, in the championship match. Veselinovic came in fourth in her flight Saturday after falling to Viviana Yrureta of Kansas State, 7-6(6), 0-6, 1-0(5). Dorr ended singles competition with a victoru after defeating Lindsey Stuckey of Indiana, 6-3, 7-6(5), while Beelen fell to Charlotte Martin of Indiana, 6-4, 6-4. Poggensee-Wei was also successful in her final singles match on Saturday, defeating Maria Martinez of Kansas, 7-6(3), 6-3, while Kayla Berry defeated Emily Dudzik of Western Michigan, 6-0, 6-2.

“Our doubles results were very strong this weekend. I’m very excited that a couple of our doubles teams have really formed,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “We won fifty percent of our matches this weekend so we had the right kind of competition and overall we competed even better than we did last weekend in Tuscaloosa, AL. This is only our second tournament of the year so I think we are in a pretty good spot right now, but we know we have a lot of work to get ourselves ready to do well in the Big Ten in the spring.”

The Hawkeyes will continue competition October 19-24, at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Ann Arbor, MI.
