IOWA CITY – The Hawkeyes completed day one of the Hawkeye Invitational today at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes had a near perfect day, winning all matches with the exception of one doubles match. Iowa competed against Iowa State and Northern Iowa in doubles competition, while facing Drake in singles play.
Two pairs of doubles teams went undefeated for the Hawkeyes. The duo of Mili Veselinovic and Merel Beelen were victorious against Drake’s Caitlin Loprinzi and Alyssa Palen, 8-3, before going on to defeat Meghana Paritala and Ashton Schwerin of Northern Iowa, 8-1. Also winning both doubles matches were Kayla Berry and Lynne Poggensee-Wei. After defeating Iowa State’s Liza Wischer and Reka Keleman, 8-2, the pair finished doubles play with an 8-1 win over Carolina Hannes and Laia Gonzalez of Northern Iowa.
Iowa’s Kelcie Klockenga and Jennifer Barnes also earned a doubles win by beating Diana Mendez and Samantha Schnobel of Iowa State 8-1. After a tough 8-3 loss to Iowa State’s Chrissy Derouin and Erin Karonis Jacqueline Lee and Alexis Dorr fought back to defeat Sampada Kanade and Sampada Kanade of Northern Iowa 8-4.
In singles action, the Hawkeyes were successful in all matches they played today against the Drake Bulldogs. Lee defeated Veronika Leszayova 6-2, 6-2, while Berry earned a 6-1, 6-1, win against Daria Zavislock. Poggensee-Wei shut down Sara Plowman 6-2, 6-1 and Veselinovic defeated Adela Aprodu 6-0, 6-1. Klockenga pulled out a tough 7-5, 6-0 win over Kari Sloboth while Dorr claimed a 6-1, 6-0 win from Irina Kalashnikova.
“We had a good first day,” said Iowa Head Coach Daryl Greenan. “This is our first competition of the season and the girls look relatively good. We were 6-1 in doubles and undefeated in singles so that is a pretty good start.”
Competition at the Hawkeye Invitational will continue tomorrow with doubles action beginning at 8:30 a.m. and singles set to begin at 9:30 a.m.
