THIS WEEK —The Hawkeyes will host Alabama Saturday and Mississippi Sunday. Competition is scheduled to begin at noon Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Doubles competition will open the matches.
THE HAWKEYES–Iowa is currently ranked 46th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Competing for the Hawkeyes will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Mili Veselinovic, Jessica Young, Lynne Poggensee-Wei, and Alexis Dorr. Lee leads the Hawkeyes with a 9-5 singles record. The duo of Beelen/Veselinovic is currently Iowa’s most successful doubles team, with a 10-2 overall record.
THE COMPETITION–Alabama and Mississippi are both currently unranked. The Hawkeyes faced Alabama last season and won 4-3. Alabama has a 2-3 spring record, and Mississippi currently holds a 4-2 record for spring play.
LAST WEEK–Iowa had a successful weekend at home, defeating unranked Marquette, 5-2, for the fifth consecutive season and No. 60 DePaul, 4-3. The Hawkeyes swept doubles competition in both matches, ending the weekend with a 6-0 doubles record. Iowa went 4-2 in singles against the Golden Eagles and 3-3 in singles against the Blue Demons, with sophomore Kelcie Klockenga winning Iowa’s final singles point against DePaul and clinching the victory for the Hawkeyes.
THIS SEASON–The Hawkeyes opened their spring season by dominating the 2008 Hawkeye Invitational, posting a 27-2 overall record against Iowa State, UNI and Drake. Senior Jacqueline Lee defended her singles tournament title and went undefeated in singles play for the tournament. Iowa is currently 2-0 in dual match play.
HEAD COACH DARYL GREENAN–Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 12-10 overall record in 2007, going 7-3 in Big Ten competition for a fourth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 44-26 overall record in three seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her sixth season with the Hawkeyes. She is a former member of the Hawkeye tennis team (1999-2002).
