No. 45 Iowa To Face Missouri

THIS WEEK —The Iowa Women’s Tennis team will host the Missouri Tigers Saturday. Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Doubles competition will open the match.

THE HAWKEYES–Iowa is currently ranked 45th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Mili Veselinovic, Jessica Young, Lynne Poggensee-Wei, and Alexis Dorr. Dorr leads the Hawkeyes with a 10-3 singles record. The duo of Lee/Dorr is currently Iowa’s most successful doubles team, with a 11-3 overall record.

THE COMPETITION–Missouri is currently unranked. Missouri’s doubles duo of Chrissy Svetlic and Mallory Weber is ranked 43rd in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. The Tigers are 7-1 .

LAST WEEK–The Hawkeyes extended their winning streak to fourafter defeating Alabama (4-3) on Saturday and Mississippi (5-2) on Sunday. Freshman Poggensee-Wei and Dorr stepped up for Iowa, winning crucial matches and helping secure last weekend’s victories. Dorr defeated Alabama’s Merrit Emery at the number four spot, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 to earn Iowa’s last singles point of the match and clinch the 4-3 victory. Poggensee-Wei, playing in her first dual singles competition of the season, went 2-0 at the number six position and also was undefeated, with teammate Kayla Berry, in doubles competition.

THIS SEASON–The Hawkeyes opened their 2008 spring season by dominating the Hawkeye Invitational against Drake, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa, ending the tournament with a 27-2 record. Iowa has since been undefeated in dual meets with a 4-0 record. The last time Iowa opened its season with four straight victories in a row was in 2004.

HEAD COACH DARYL GREENAN–Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 12-10 overall record in 2007, going 7-3 in Big Ten competition for a fourth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 44-26 overall record in three seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her sixth season with the Hawkeyes. She is a former member of the Hawkeye tennis team (1999-2002).

QUOTING COACH GREENAN–“We’re looking forward to the match against Missouri. The girls are playing with confidence and we’re hungry to be 5-0. We have to be ready because Missouri is a good team. It will be another tough battle for us.”
