The Hawkeyes Settle The Score With Iowa State

IOWA CITY – 19th-ranked Iowa competed in the “Pink Meet” defeating 32nd-ranked Iowa State Friday, 195.35-192.65. The Hawkeyes took the title on all four events and in the all-around. The meet honored seniors Katie Burke, Amanda Rudolph and Ally Zipse. Iowa is now 9-4-1 this season.

On vault, the Hawkeyes earned a team total 48.725, while Jenifer Simbhudas took the title with a 9.8. Burke and junior Kara Pinjuv tied for second scoring 9.775. Rebecca Simbhudas earned a sixth-place 9.75, while Brandi Loffer placed eighth with a 9.625. Senior Amanda Rudolph rounded out vault competition for Iowa earning a 9.0 to tie for 11th place with Iowa State’s Jasmine Thompson.

Competition was tight after the first rotation but Iowa pulled ahead after the second rotation with a season-best 49.0 on bars. Burke and Rebecca Simbhudas tied for first with a 9.85, which is a new personal best for Simbhudas. Houry Gebeshian also improved her personal best bars score against the Cyclones. She earned a 9.8 to tie for fourth with Jody McKellar of Iowa State. Brittany Logan tied for sixth with Jenifer Simbhudas, posting a 9.75, while Loffer finished 11th with a 9.475.

In the third rotation Iowa lengthened the lead posting a team total 48.725 on beam while Iowa State scored 48.45 on floor. The title went to Rebecca Simbhudas with a score of 9.825. Iowa’s next best scores were seen by Jenifer Simbhudas and Pinjuv who tied for second with a 9.8, while Gebeshian finished seventh with a 9.725. Burke placed eighth with a 9.575 and Loffer placed ninth with a 9.55.

The Hawkeyes finished strong with a 48.9 on floor. Jenifer Simbhudas earned her second event title of the evening with a 9.9. Pinjuv was Iowa’s next best competitor, finishing third with a 9.8 while Gebeshian placed fourth with a 9.75. Burke and Loffer tied for fifth with a 9.725 and Jenny Donar placed 10th with a 9.625.

Jenifer Simbhudas was again Iowa’s top all-around competitor against Iowa State, scoring 39.25 to take first. Burke placed second with a 38.925 while Loffer placed fourth with a 38.375.

“The highlight of tonight was the look on the seniors’ faces after coming from where they started to where they are now in terms of competition,” said Iowa Head Coach Larissa Libby. “This win is a big deal for us. The team was a little uptight but this is a big meet and it is important because everyone loves to see an in-state rivalry. I’m proud of this team. They continue to teach each other how to compete at the level they need to. The team continues to impress, showing focus, determination and dedication.”

Iowa will wrap-up regular season competition at Southern Utah, March 14, at 7 p.m.
