Weil Named Co-Big Ten Pitcher Of The Week

April 14, 2008

IOWA CITY – Junior pitcher Brittany Weil has been named co-Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, sharing the honor with Michigan’s Nikki Nemitz. This is the third time this season and the fourth time in her career that Weil has been tabbed Big Ten Pitcher of the Week.

Weil threw 29.1 innings last week, finishing with a 3-1 record, a 0.72 earned run average and 36 strikeouts.

The Garden Grove, CA, native tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout while striking out nine in Iowa’s upset win over 14th-ranked Northwestern Sunday. She allowed no earned runs, and after the first inning, retired 17 of the final 19 batters. She also struck out three of the final five batters to secure the win.

Weil started the weekend by tying her season-high in strikeouts with 11 against Michigan State Friday night. She threw her 16th complete game of the season against the Spartans and walked only one batter.

Weil also tossed 3.2 innings relief on Saturday to pick up her 17th win of the season in game two against the Spartans.

The Hawkeye junior earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors this season after Iowa’s opening weekend (Feb. 18) and also after finishing the Amy S. Harrison Classic with a perfect 3-0 record (March 11).

Iowa returns to action Friday night against Big Ten foe Wisconsin. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Pearl Field.
