IOWA CITY, IA — THIS WEEK — The Iowa Women’s tennis team will compete in the 2008 Big Ten Conference Championships at West Lafeyette, IN beginning Thursday. The Hawkeyes concluded regular season play with a 12-9 mark, 3-7 Big Ten record and are seeded seventh in the Big Ten. Iowa will begin tournament play against tenth-seeded Penn State at 2 p.m. (CT) Thursday. All matches will be played at the Schwartz Tennis Center on the Purdue University campus.
THE HAWKEYES — Iowa is currently ranked 56th in the FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. Competing for the Hawkeyes this week will be Jennifer Barnes, Merel Beelen, Kayla Berry, Kelcie Klockenga, Jacqueline Lee, Mili Veselinovic, Jessica Young, Lynne Poggensee-Wei, and Alexis Dorr. Veselinovic, ranked 82nd nationally, leads the Hawkeyes with a 25-6 overall singles record. The duo of Lee/Dorr is currently Iowa’s top doubles team, with a 19-12 record.
THIS SEASON — Iowa opened its 2008 spring season by dominating the Hawkeye Invitational against Drake, Iowa State, and Northern Iowa, ending the tournament with a 27-2 record. Lee was named co-Big Ten Athlete of the Week Jan. 20 after an outstanding performance at the Hawkeye Invitational. Iowa has since gone 12-9 in match play, and 3-7 in the conference. Senior Mili Veselinovic started the season off with a 13-match winning streak and broke the Iowa school record for career singles wins. The 82nd-ranked Veselinovic currently boasts 112 career singles wins and is on track to break the school record for most singles wins as a senior.
THE COMPETITION — Penn State is currently unranked and posted an 8-13 overall mark and a 2-8 (Big Ten) record this season. Iowa defeated the Nittany Lions (5-2) earlier this season and boasts a 19-2 overall series record against Penn State.
LAST WEEK — Iowa concluded regular season play on the road last weekend. The Hawkeyes traveled to West Lafayette, IN Saturday and snapped a four match losing streak by defeating Purdue 5-2. Making the trip to Champaign, IL Sunday, Iowa concluded its dual match season against 54th-ranked Illinois. Earning the doubles point to gain a 1-0 lead, the Hawkeyes were unable to win a match and lost 6-1.
LAST TIME AT BIG TEN CHAMPIONSHIPS — Iowa entered the 2006-07 Big Ten Championships as the fourth seed and received a bye into quarterfinal competition. The Hawkeyes found success in their first match of the tournament, defeating No. 5 Ohio State (4-2) and advancing to the semifinals. Iowa then lost to top-ranked Northwestern, 4-1.
HEAD COACH Daryl Greenan — Coach Daryl Greenan is in his fourth season as head coach of the Hawkeyes. Greenan led the Hawkeyes to a 12-10 overall record in 2007, going 7-3 in Big Ten competition for a fourth place league finish. Greenan was named 2006 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Greenan has a 44-26 overall record in three seasons at Iowa. Toni Neykova is the assistant coach and is in her sixth season with the Hawkeyes. She is a former member of the Hawkeye tennis team (1999-2002).
