IOWA CITY, IA – In the first game of the Iowa City regional, No. 14 seed Long Beach State edged Creighton, 2-1 in extra innings. With the bases loaded, Long Beach State junior Brianna Goad reached on an error, scoring pinch-runner Casey Burba from third base.

Both teams looked shaky defensively in the opening round game. Creighton (43-16) committed four errors, while Long Beach State (40-15) committed three. Brooke Turner (27-4) earned the complete-game win for Long Beach State, yielding only three hits and one walk in eight innings while striking out five.

The 49ers got things going early, all with two outs. Senior catcher Brooke LeSage walked, stole second base and scored on an RBI single from clean-up hitter Jennifer Griffin.

Creighton starting pitcher Tara Oltman got out of a jam in the bottom of the fourth. After a single and two errors allowed Long Beach State runners to load the bases with nobody out, Oltman struck out Franciska Morlet, induced Jessica Beaver into a fielder’s choice, forcing out Lacy Tyler at home, and then got Jonae Perez to ground out to end the inning.

The Blue Jays’ tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Jessie Jadlowski.

Oltman (31-8) was the losing pitcher, giving up six hits and two runs (one earned) over seven-and-one-third innings, while striking out six.
