WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost a close game to No. 3 Wake Forest in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge Saturday, 3-2 at Kentner Stadium. The Hawkeyes are 0-1 on the young season.
Fifth-ranked Iowa started strong, leading at the half by a score of 2-0. Seniors Caitlin McCurdy and Caroline Blaum each recorded goals for Iowa. McCurdy put the Hawkeyes ahead 1-0 with a goal off a rebound in the 21st minute. Minutes later, Blaum made the score 2-0, scoring a goal off a rebound in the 30th minute.
Wake Forest took control after halftime, scoring two quick goals. Minou Gimbrere put the Demon Deacons on the board, scoring off a corner in the 40th minute. Moments later, Melissa Martin scored on a pass from Raisa Schiller in the 42nd minute to tie the match at two.
Hilary Moore scored the game-winner off a corner in the 54th minute, making the score 3-2.
“Today was a tale of two halves,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We played well in the first half with good energy. In the second half we ran out of gas and did not play with good strategy. Our defense could not keep the momentum. In addition, we had a goal off of a corner called back in the second half. We had plenty of opportunities; we just could not capitalize on them.”
The Hawkeyes return to action tomorrow against top-rated North Carolina at 1 p.m. (CT) in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
