WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated No. 1 North Carolina Sunday, 3-2, at Kentner Stadium. Iowa ended the Tar Heels’ 25-game winning streak. The streak dated back to last season where North Carolina finished 24-0, winning the National Championship. The fifth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 1-1 on the season after splitting games between No. 3 Wake Forest and North Carolina at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

North Carolina started strong, getting an early goal from Danielle Forword in the ninth minute to make the score 1-0. A slow first half would end there, with the score 1-0.

Illse Davids scored off of a rebound in the 47th minute to push the Tar Heel advantage to 2-0. Just moments later, in the 49th minute, senior Caitlin McCurdy scored off a cross from fellow senior Caroline Blaum for the Hawkeyes, making the score 2-1.

As the game approached the final minutes, Iowa put the pressure on. Senior Katie Naughton scored off a rebound in the 67th minute, tying the game at two. Moments later, McCurdy and Blaum led a breakaway. Blaum crossed a pass to McCurdy and she fired it passed Brianna O’Donnell for her second goal of the day and third of the season as Iowa took the advantage, 3-2.

North Carolina did not play with a goalkeeper the final minute, but the Hawkeyes stood strong and did not allow a goal to get the win.

“Today we put two halves together,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We stuck to our game plan and everyone gave unbelievable effort. It was a complete team effort and a great rebound from yesterday.”

Senior captain Roz Ellis was also happy with the victory.

“We did an awesome job bouncing back from yesterday,” said Ellis. “Today was a total Hawkeye effort. We played strong and everybody left it all out on the field.”

The Hawkeyes return home to take on No. 15 American Friday. The game will start at 3 p.m. at Grant Field.
