LOUISVILLE, KY – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated 11th-ranked Louisville Sunday, 1-0. The sixth-ranked Hawkeyes are now 8-2 on the season.
The first half was a defensive battle and ended with no score. The Iowa defense dominated, allowing only shot and one penalty corner in the first half.
The Hawkeyes struck in the 39th minute off a penalty corner as Lauren Pfeiffer scored her seventh goal of the season and fourth in the last two games. The goal was assisted by Sarah Pergine and Tricia Dean.
The Iowa defense kept the pressure on and did not allow a shot in the final 20 minutes of play to preserve the victory.
“It was a big win for us today,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We had to stay diligent with our offense because the shots were not going in as easily today. Our forwards put a lot of pressure on their defense and we were able to draw enough penalty corners to eventually score a goal. It was a solid team performance today and to get two big regional wins on the road is huge.”
Iowa returns home to face Northwestern Friday. The match will begin at 3 p.m. at Grant Field.
