Hawkeyes Kick Off Day One Of Midwest Regional

The Iowa women’s tennis team kicked off competition at the 2008 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Thursday. The Hawkeyes showed up to compete, garnering a 4-2 singles record for day one.

Iowa had three athletes compete in the qualifying draw of day one, freshman Ally Majercik, sophomore Jessica Young and junior Kelcie Klockenga. Young dazzled the courts in rounds one and two, defeating Dana Guentert of host Michigan State 6-3, 6-4 and Amy Allin of Illinois 6-1, 7-6(4) to move into Friday’s round three.

Freshman Hawkeye Majercik played hard in round one earning a solid win over Veronika Wojakowska of Bradley, going 6-1, 6-1 to thrust her into round two. But Annie McCarthy of Illinois defeated Majercik in a tough round two battle 7-5, 6-1.

Klockenga defeated Kristin McPhillips 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the consolation draw for yet another Hawkeye win on Thursday.

Iowa will continue into day two of competition at the ITA Midwest Regional tomorrow. The singles competition is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m. with the doubles beginning at 2 p.m.
