EVANSTON, IL — The Hawkeye wrestling team leads the team standings and advanced 10 competitors to the championship quarterfinals after Monday’s first session at the 46th annual Midlands Championships in Evanston, IL. Iowa – the defending team champion – leads the team race with 43 points. Intra-state rival Iowa State is in second with 38.5.
Seniors Charlie Falck (125) and Alex Tsirtsis (141), juniors Daniel Dennis (133), Dan LeClere (141), Brent Metcalf (149), Ryan Morningstar (165), Jay Borschel (174), Phillip Keddy (184) and Dan Erekson (Hwt.), and redshirt freshman Montell Marion (133) each advanced to Monday night’s championship quarterfinals. Falck, Metcalf and Borschel are each the top seeds at their respective weight classes, while Tsirtsis and Keddy are both seeded second. Marion, Metcalf and Erekson helped Iowa’s team point total by each pinning both of their first-round opponents. Eight other Hawkeyes (Matt McDonough-133, Mark Ballweg-141, Matt Ballweg-157, Nick LeClere-157, Jake Kerr-165, Grant Gambrall-184, Rick Loera-197, Brodie Ambrose-197) are still alive in the consolation bracket.
