IOWA CITY — The Iowa baseball team lost the finale of a three-game series to Indiana, 8-4, at Duane Banks Field Sunday. Indiana pitcher Matt Bashore kept the Hawkeye offense off balance, striking out ten and allowing only two walks. Bashore went eight and one-third innings, allowing only two earned runs in the win.

Ryan Durant went 1-for-4 with two runs scored to extend his hitting streak to eight games. Nick Brown and Kevin Hoef went 1-for-3. Brown had an RBI, Hoef accounted for one run scored. McQuillan went 1-for-2 with an RBI and hit-by-pitch.

“We didn’t execute offensively,” Head Coach Jack Dahm said. “Also, every Indiana scoring opportunity today was created by us. We need to find a way to get that next win. We need to play better, harder and smarter.”

Iowa (11-20, 2-7)took an early lead, 1-0. Justin Toole led off and reached on a short stop error, Hoef moved him over with a sacrifice bunt. Toole reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a Brown groundout to put the Hawkeyes on top.

Indiana (16-17- 6-2) plated three to take a 3-1 the lead in the third and never looked back. The Hoosiers plated three on three hits and took advantage of one Iowa error.

The Black and Gold chipped away at the Hoosier lead in the fourth, plating one for a 3-2 score. Hoef started things with a single to right center, followed by a Brown single to right field. Hoef scored and Brown advanced to second on an error by the right fielder.

Indiana ran away with the game–scoring at least one run in the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to insure a win. The Hoosiers scattered five hits in those innings and capitalized on free bases.

Iowa plated one run in the seventh frame to make it a 5-3 ballgame. The Hawkeyes tried to play catch up in the bottom of the ninth, however, with the bases loaded and the tying run at the plate– was unable to do it due to a double play to end the inning. Iowa plated one run, for an 8-4 final. With one out, Durant singled. Sean Flanagan singled, followed by a McQuillan single to load the bases. Durant scored on a Dallas Burke walk.

Iowa is scheduled to travel to Lincoln, NE Tuesday to take on Nebraska. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
