Weil Selected As Big Ten Pitcher Of The Week

April 27, 2009

IOWA CITY – University of Iowa senior pitcher Brittany Weil has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for her efforts in Iowa’s three wins last week. This is the third time this season and eighth time in her career Weil has been given the award.

If Weil manages to receive the award another time this season, she will tie Michigan’s Marissa Young and Northwestern’s Eileen Canney as the only pitchers to receive the honor nine-career times.

Weil picked up all three of Iowa’s wins last week, and did not allow a run in 11 innings pitched. She struck out 19 batters with just one walk, and gave up only four hits with a .105 opponent batting average.

She threw four innings relief in Iowa’s win at Northern Iowa, giving up just one hit with six strikeouts. She continued Saturday with another four innings, giving up just two hits with another six K’s against Indiana.

Weil topped off the weekend by allowing just one hit over three innings of work against the Hoosiers. She struck out seven of the 11 batters she faced in the win.

Weil also moved into seventh place on the Big Ten career strikeout list, passing former Northwestern hurler Courtnay Foster. Weil is Iowa’s all-time strikeout leader with 1,026 K’s. Her 282 strikeouts this season ranks third on Iowa’s single season list, and she needs just 32 more to become Iowa’s single season leader.

Weil has been named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week more than any other player to pitch at Iowa. Last season, Weil became the first Iowa player to garner the award four times in a single season.

Weil and the Hawkeyes return to action Wednesday, when they face intra-state rival Drake at 5 p.m. at Pearl Field.
