Hawkeyes Fall At No. 17 Massachusetts

AMHERST, MA – – The ninth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell at No. 17 Massachusetts, 4-3, Saturday. The Hawkeyes are 0-3 on the season.

“I thought we played well,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We had people step up but it was a tough game. We need to regroup and bounce back tomorrow.”

The Minutewomen struck first in the 14th minute as Kara Charochak scored to give UMass a 1-0 lead. The Hawkeyes responded in the 29th minute. Freshman Sarah Drake recorded her first career goal to tie the game at one. Drake struck again in the early moments off the second half. She recorded her second goal of the day 54 seconds into the second half, giving Iowa a 2-1 lead. Just seconds later, Cher Kind scored for UMass to tie the game at two.

Jamie Bourazeris tallied a goal in the 55th minute to make the score 3-2 in favor of Massachusetts. Minutes later, the Minutewomen extended their lead as Katie Kelly scored to push the score to 4-2.

Senior Jess Werley scored for the Hawkeyes in the 64th minute, cutting the score to 4-3. The Black and Gold were unable to find the goal the rest of the way and fell 4-3.

The Hawkeyes face Boston University Sunday in Amherst, MA. Game time is scheduled for noon (CDT).
