IOWA CITY, IA – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated Saint Louis Saturday at Grant Field, 12-0. The Hawkeyes move to 2-5 on the season with the victory.
The Hawkeyes scored ten first-half goals en route to a big win over the Billikens. The Black and Gold struck early in the third minute of play as Sarah Drake scored off a corner. Meghan Beamesderfer was credited with the assist.
In the seventh minute of play, Jess Werley scored off a deflection to push the Iowa lead to 2-0. Moments later, Dean scored her first of three consecutive goals. The three goals mark the first career hat trick for Dean. With Iowa leading 5-0, Werley then scored back-to-back goals to push the Hawkeye lead to 7-0. The three goals also mark the first career hat trick for Werley.
At the 29:16 mark, Beamesderfer scored for Iowa. Two minutes later, she added another to give Iowa a 9-0 advantage. Freshman Geena Lesiak scored in the 34th minute, extending the Iowa lead to 10-0 at halftime.
Drake scored her second goal of the game in the 55th minute. Becca Spengler then scored at the 62:58 mark, giving Iowa a 12-0 lead.
The 12 goals scored are the most scored by Iowa since 1997 when the Hawkeyes defeated Saint Louis, 13-0.
The Hawkeyes open Big Ten play Friday at Michigan. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. central time. The game can be seen as a tape-delayed broadcast Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. central time on the Big Ten Network.
