EVANSTON, IL – – The University of Iowa field hockey team defeated conference rival Northwestern Friday in overtime, 1-0, in Evanston, IL. The win marks the second-straight shutout over a conference opponent.
Iowa put the pressure on the Wildcat defense early. The Hawkeyes recorded five shots in the opening 15 minutes of play but were unable to come away with a score. There would be no score at halftime.
Both teams traded possessions in the second half but neither team was able to push across a score. Regulation would end with a scoreless tie.
At the 77:51 mark, Iowa was awarded a penalty corner. Moments later, junior Sarah Pergine found senior Tricia Dean who scored the game winner for the Hawkeyes from the left wing.
Freshman goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw recorded her second career and second-straight shutout. She recorded nine saves on the day.
Today was Iowa’s conference finale. The Hawkeyes will return home to face No. 14 Louisville Sunday for Senior Day. Iowa will honor three outstanding seniors (Meghan Beamesderfer, Dean, Jess Werley). The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Grant Field. Admission is free.
