Iowa Women's Tennis Completes Day Two

Oct. 24, 2009

The University of Iowa women’s tennis team competed in day two of the ITA Midwest Regional tournament Saturday. The singles competition was the main event Saturday. Iowa finished 8-7 overall.

Zuzi Chmelarova proved she is not fazed by new competition. The Hawkeye is facing the majority of the competitors in this region for the first time, but that didn’t stop her from recording wins over Gruber of Wisconsin (6-2, 6-0) and McCarthy of Illinois (6-2, 7-5).

“I’m really proud of the girls that are still playing. Kelcie and Jessica are in the finals in doubles, which is very exciting. I think they are showing they are ready to win a championship,” Mira Radu said. “Zuzi is also in the semifinals, which is nice to see. Lynne and Sonja played well against good competition today. I think it was a challenging tournament, but I know the girls learned a lot from this opportunity even if they are no longer playing. I think we had a really great fall season and we are looking forward to getting back to practice and getting to work.”

Sonja Molnar defeated Pantusart of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-1. Lynne Poggensee-Wei recorded a win over Mirnova of Wisconsin (7-6, 6-1). Jessica Young and Merel Beelen both downed Chupa of Wisconsin, 7-6, 7-5 and 6-4, 6-1, respectively. Ally Majercik won her match against Gruber of Wisconsin, 6-0, 6-1, and Kelcie Klockenga was victorious in her match with Frey of Eastern Illinois, 6-2, 6-1.

Klockenga and Young was the only Iowa duo to get a win in doubles competition. They took down Chupa/Markovik of Wisconsin, 8-6.

Play will continue tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.
