EAST LANSING, MI – – The University of Iowa field hockey team lost at Michigan State Friday, 5-1, in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. The loss ends Iowa’s tournament record ten-match winning streak.

“We had a good second half but it was not enough,” said Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum. “We dug ourselves too big of a hole. Meg (Beamesderfer) had a good game and so did Tricia (Dean) and Sarah (Drake). I was proud of how we came out in the second half.”

The top-seeded and regular season league champions scored four first-half goals and led at the break, 4-0. In the second half, the Black and Gold came out firing and put the pressure on the Spartans. Senior Tricia Dean scored for Iowa off a corner in the 46th minute to make the score 4-1. Junior Sarah Pergine was credited with the assist.

The Hawkeyes kept the pressure on and controlled much of the second half but were unable to push across another score. No. 8 Michigan State added a late goal to defeat Iowa, 5-1.

Today’s match ends Iowa’s run of three-straight Big Ten Tournament titles.
