IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team continued its winning streak, defeating Marquette, 6-1, in an intense match Friday night at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. The Hawkeyes improved to 4-1 on the season with the victory over the Big East opponent.
Doubles action was exciting with Kelcie Klockenga and Jessica Young getting the first Hawkeye victory with an 8-6 win over Olga Fischer and Psola Calderon. Senior duo, Merel Beelen and Zuzi Chmelarova, clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Maggie Wilson and Gillian Hush. Sonja Molnar and Lynne Poggensee-Wei completed the doubles sweep with an exciting 8-7 (7-1) victory over Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush.
Molnar, ranked 87th nationally, was the first Hawkeye to earn a singles victory. The sophomore downed Calderon, 6-2, 6-1. Young’s singles success continued as she defeated Rachael Hush, 6-0, 6-4. Senior Klockenga secured the Iowa victory with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Christina Ruiz. Poggensee-Wei was successful in her match with Olga Fischer, recording a 6-3, 6-4 win. Junior Alexis Dorr preserved her perfect season by taking down Gillian Hush, 6-1, 6-3. Beelen fought hard in a three set tie-break. The senior from Holland won the first set, 6-4, but fell in the second set, 2-6. The final set swung in favor of Barry, 7-5. Ally Majercik also competed for the Hawkeyes in an exhibition match, posting a 6-4, 6-1 win over Elly Strother.
The Black and Gold return to the courts Sunday to host in-state rival Iowa State. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. The winning team will earn two points to count towards its university’s total in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series.
