Feb. 21, 2010

IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team earned two points to count towards Iowa’s total in the annual Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk series with a 7-0 win over Iowa State Sunday afternoon.

“It feels good,” Head Coach Katie Dougherty says of her first win against the in-state rivals. “Coming out 7-0 against them is impressive so we’re happy about that and happy about being able to contribute to the Cy-Hawk series.”

Iowa duos swept the competition to take the first point of the match. Jessica Young and Kelcie Klockenga finished first, taking down Alyssa Palen and Liza Wischer, 8-2. Sonja Molnar and Lynne Poggensee-Wei earned the win over Erin Karonis and Jenna Langhorst, 8-2. Merel Beelen and Ally Majercik teamed up for the first time this season to complete the perfect doubles showing. The duo downed Tessa Lang and Maria Fernanda Macedo, 8-6.

Beelen bounced back from Friday’s match to make quick work of her opponent, recording a 6-3, 6-0 win over Lang. Klockenga downed Wischer, 6-3, 6-1, and No. 87 Molnar posted a 6-3, 6-2 win over Karonis for the fourth team point. Marie-Christine Chartier was the unlucky opponent of Alexis Dorr Sunday. The junior from Doylestown, PA improved her record to 5-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Jessica Young persevered in a third set tie-break match against Langhorst. Young started strong with a 6-4 decision in the first set then fell 4-6 in the second, but rebounded quickly to post a 6-3 win in the third set. Poggensee-Wei also forced an extra set after falling in the first, 5-7 to Fernanda Macedo. The senior went on to win the next two sets, 6-2, 10-8. Majercik split with Jasmine Lee in a non-counting match, 3-6, 6-3.

The Hawkeyes (5-1) travel to Minnesota next weekend to face the first Big Ten opponent of the season Friday. Iowa will also face Princeton Saturday at the neutral site. Match times are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
