IOWA CITY, IA – University of Iowa sophomore Sonja Molnar was named Big Ten Player of the Week following a 4-0 performance against Missouri and No. 24 DePaul last weekend. Molnar, Iowa’s top-ranked competitor, improved to 9-1 in dual action and 18-6 overall.

Currently ranked 77th in the nation, Molnar showed great leadership in securing No. 54 Iowa’s win over No. 24 DePaul in the final match of the dual. The Guelph, Ontario native defeated senior Anna Redecsi in straight sets to push Iowa to the 4-3 upset win. She also teamed up with Merel Beelen in doubles action to take down the 10th-ranked duo in the nation, 9-7.

“Sonja competed very well this weekend,” said Head Coach Katie Dougherty. “She stepped up in both singles and doubles when she needed to and played smart and aggressive on big points.”

Iowa’s win over DePaul marked the second time this season Molnar clinched the win over a ranked opponent. She aced her serve to seal a 4-3 victory over then No. 44 Princeton Feb. 27th.

The Hawkeyes return to action March 18th when they face Wichita State in San Diego, CA.
