THIS WEEK The 35th ranked Iowa women’s tennis team heads west for a Spring Break trip to California this week. The Hawkeyes have matches against Wichita State Thursday and Tulsa Saturday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 3 (CT).

THE COMPETITION Wichita State is 5-6 on the season. The Shockers, led by Head Coach Colin Foster, are coming off of a recent upset of No. 31 Rice University. Tulsa is also coming off of a 5-2 win over Rice. The Hurricanes, coached by Dean Orford, are 12-4 overall.

HAWKEYES MOVIN’ ON UP The women’s tennis team made its first appearance of the season in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s team rankings last week at the 54th spot. After downing then-no. 24 DePaul last weekend, the Hawkeyes shot up the list, jumping 19 positions to No. 35.

IOWA UPSETS DEPAUL Head Coach Katie Dougherty has kept her Iowa team focused this season, and it showed last weekend when the Hawkeyes upset DePaul, 4-3. The win was big for the veteran team as it was the second ranked opponent they have posted a win over in ten days. Senior Merel Beelen and sophomore Sonja Molnar joined the two other Iowa duos in sweeping their doubles opponents. Beelen and Molnar teamed up to fight for an exciting win over tenth ranked Anna Redecsi and Selma Salkovic, 9-7. Alexis Dorr pulled through in singles action with an important 6-3, 6-2 win at the sixth spot. Beelen also posted a straight-set singles win, and Molnar sealed the exciting win by downing Redesci, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in the final match of the day to earn Iowa’s fourth point.

IOWA TENNIS BLOG Iowa tennis fans will be able to follow members of the Hawkeye tennis team as they blog about the 2010 season . The Iowa student-athletes will discuss the Hawkeyes’ upcoming matches, road trips and what it’s like being a student-athlete at the University of Iowa.

UP NEXT The Hawkeyes will be back in action on their home courts next weekend, March 27 and 28th. Iowa hosts Michigan and Michigan State in a pair of Big Ten matches scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. both days.
