IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team wasn’t able to derail Southeast Missouri State’s 11-meet home winning streak in Cape Girardeau, MO, Friday evening. The Hawkeyes posted a team score of 193.625, but weren’t able to keep up with the Redhawks’ 195.125 tally.
Houry Gebeshian led Iowa with a victory in the all-around competition. The junior was the only athlete to reach the 39.000 mark in the event as she scored a 39.100. Junior Rebecca Simbhudas finished in second with a 38.975 while sophomore Jessa Hansen scored a 38.400 and placed fourth.
The GymHawks began the night on bars where they scored a 48.650. Simbhudas and Hansen both led the team as they tied for second with scores of 9.800 apiece.
Simbhudas then led the Hawkeyes to a team score of 48.550 on vault. The Markham, Ontario, native won the event with an individual score of 9.875. Gebeshian tied for third with a score of 9.775.
Iowa then moved to floor in the third rotation, earning its highest event score of the evening with a 49.000. Simbhudas led the squad once again with a score of 9.875 and a second place finish. Gebeshian placed third after scoring a 9.850.
The Hawkeyes finished the night on beam where they scored a 47.425. Junior Andrea Hurlburt led the team with a second place finish. The Waterloo native scored a 9.800. Gebeshian scored a 9.725 and finished tied for fourth.
The GymHawks will begin their post season March 27 when they travel to Columbus, OH, for the Big Ten Championships. Competition will be held in St. John Arena and is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (CT).
